WILLIAMSBURG — Williamsburg Mayor Douglas Pons was elected chair of the Hampton Roads Planning District Commission (HRPDC) on Jan. 19, the city announced.

The regional organization — one of 21 planning district commissions in Virginia — includes the Hampton Roads area’s 17 municipalities and provides a forum for regional cooperation. The goal of the organization is to improve the region’s quality of life.

Pons has served on the HRPDC since his election as mayor in July 2020. He succeeds Norfolk City Councilmember Andria McClellan in the role as chair.

“I am truly honored to receive the support of my Hampton Roads Planning District Commission colleagues,” Pons said. “From coastal resiliency to economic development to interstate transportation and congestion, it is important for Williamsburg to be a partner in regional solutions.”

Pons is currently serving his fourth term on the Williamsburg City Council.
