YORKTOWN — Blown Away Salon opened its newest location in Williamsburg earlier this year, and owner Michelle Green has plans to continue expanding in the future.
Green started doing hair when she was 16 years old and on her own with her new husband for support. At the time, Green had planned on joining the military, but that changed when she had her daughter at 18.
“I’ve always enjoyed taking care of people and making people feel beautiful, and when I was in cosmetology school and got my license at 16, it was just kind of to have a backup plan,” Green explained. “But once I turned 18 and had her, it was ‘OK, you gotta make a career real fast.’ So I did.”
Before Green opened her first salon, she worked at a few corporate salons, moving up the ranks to management rather quickly. In 2011, when Green was 26 and pregnant with her second child, she decided to venture out on her own. Green considers it one of the scariest things she has ever done before.
Green wanted to create an environment that helped lift up not only customers but stylists as well. And she wanted to teach others that came from nothing that it is possible to become something. She also wanted to flourish in a creative environment that helped customers feel beautiful about themselves.
Since opening her first salon, Green has expanded, not only the size of her first location, but also opening up two other salons in Yorktown and Williamsburg. Services at the salon don’t just end at hair care. The salon also offers a variety of treatments, from massage to permanent makeup, to waxing.
It wasn’t always smooth sailing, however. The Yorktown location opened three weeks before the COVID shutdown in 2020.

“I thought it was an epic fail. I thought it wasn’t going to make it,” Green said. “We opened back up in June, and the salon has since doubled in numbers. Then in March of 2022, I opened the Williamsburg salon.”
The salon employs ten apprentices and over 40 employees between the three locations, priding itself on the diversity of hairstyles and textures it’s able to work with, as well as having access to spa treatments for those who need them.
Green has other plans for the future of the Blown Away salon brand, including eventually opening her own academies and she is in the process of obtaining her instructor’s license. She wants to find new ways to lift up others and help them grow, as well as offer support, the same way she has received support from her mentors and salon coach.
“My goal is to look more into having my own brand academy so I can create the financial part of it, you know, build people up to learn how to grow themselves and grow their credit score and financials along with hair,” Green said. “A lot of time when I get students right out of high school or right out of beauty school, they have no clue about any of the career field and barely know what they’re doing. So there is a potential out there for that.”
The salon is open Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., though locations may vary. Green is considering expanding hours in the near future. Appointments can be booked at the salons by calling or by scheduling online. or by downloading the Blown Away Salon app.
