YORKTOWN — The 25th Annual Lighted Boat Parade (LBP) floated its way along the York River on Saturday, Dec. 4. While the event was well attended, it was not without controversy.
One of the boats featured “FJB” and the slogan “Let’s Go Brandon” in lights.
Chanting the phrase “Let’s Go Brandon” has become a popular euphemism for conservative groups used in place of the saying “F*** Joe Biden” as a colloquialism to show disdain for President Joe Biden.
Initial reports to WYDaily by community members that were present for the parade stated that the boat with the polarizing decorations, named “Southern Rock” and owned by Capt. Bill Berger, won best in show for the parade. A public post on Berger’s personal Facebook page also acknowledged that he won “Best in Show.” However, the LBP Committee did not return WYDaily’s request to confirm this.
When reaching out for comment from Visit Yorktown, a division of York County’s Tourism office, Dock Master Captain James Scruggs said that the points for the “Best in Show” prize were being reevaluated after some “discrepancies” among the judges. He did not detail what those were, but said the new winners would be announced shortly.
WYDaily also reached out to parade judges, York County Board of Supervisors Chairman Chad Green and York-Poquoson Sheriff J.D. “Danny” Diggs for comment. As of publication time, neither official had responded.
