History and coffee may have never before tasted so good together.
Mobjack Bay Coffee Roasters are now offering guided walking tours through historic Yorktown.
Mobjack Bay Coffee Roasters previously operated out of Gloucester for 11 years before moving to their new location at the Cole Diggs house in 2018.
Co-owner Celeste Gucanac said she discovered the location after walking around Yorktown and reading the plaque on the house. The house was a woman-run coffee and tea house in the 1800s.
“My family and I love the national park system,” Gucanac said. “The fact that this building was vacant and also something near and dear to our hearts with the coffee business and it happened to be in a national park, it was a trifecta of things we really like.”
Aside from coffee and parks, Gucanac said her family also adores history, so it was only natural to capitalize on the significance of their location.
The coffee house began offering their “Stroll with a Historian” tours on the Fourth of July weekend.
The tours last about an hour and take groups up of to 20 people to 10 stops in the area. The tours are led by historian J. Michael Moore and American history educator Maureen Wise.
“What I really love about Michael and Maureen is that they both have such a deep passion for history,” Gucanac said. “When you’re on a tour with them, you can’t help but have that be contagious.”
The tours take patrons inside historic buildings on Main Street, such as the Thomas Nelson house, and onto the Yorktown Battlefields.
Gucanac added the tours can be geared toward any subject, and they also allow for private tours. Moore and Wise collaborate on creating different topics for each tour surrounding the eras of the Revolutionary and Civil wars.
“We are the only business certified to operate in the national park giving tours,” Gucanac said.
They are hosting a twilight tour about pirates in Yorktown from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Aug. 15. The tour will bring patrons to the beaches, gardens, and through the streets. This tour is free for children 12 and younger.
The tours cost $30 per person, but kids 10 years and younger are free. You can book a “Stroll with a Historian” tour by visiting the Mobjack Bay Coffee Roasters website.
