NORFOLK, VA – The City of Norfolk is inviting the public to pay tribute to the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with two free, community events planned in his honor, according to a press release.
The Virginia Symphony, in partnership with the City of Norfolk, will hold “Songs for a Dreamer” on Sunday, January 19, 2020 at 7:00 p.m. The event is the largest arts celebration of Dr. King’s life annually in Hampton Roads. This performance is free and open to the public and will take place at Booker T. Washington High School located at 1111 Park Avenue in Norfolk, VA 23504.
This multimedia concert will feature the musicians of the Virginia Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Kellen Gray. A highlight of the evening will be the presentation of VSO’s annual Dreamer Award to Ms. Elizabeth Eccles, former director of the I. Sherman Greene Chorale.
The City of Norfolk will host its annual ceremony honoring Dr. King on Monday, January 20 at 10:00 am at the Attucks Theatre 1010 Church Street. Doors open at 9:00 am. This year’s keynote speaker will be Reverend Dr. Yvonne Y. Delk, a long-time ally for human and civil rights for people of color, children and the poor. The event will include selections from local musicians and a performance by Ms. Jessie Wagner, a native of Norfolk, and professional singer/songwriter and actress.
Following the ceremony, the public is invited to march to the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial for a wreath-laying ceremony.
