This month, Virginia Beer Co. is putting an emphasis on community.
The brewery has released two “community-inspired” beers this week, one honoring women’s equality and the other in celebration of the Kiwanis Club’s 40th Shrimp Feast fundraiser, Virginia Beer Co. wrote in a news release.
On Friday, Virginia Beer Co. tapped “39 Words,” a super saison brewed with blueberry puree, raspberry puree and lemon zest.
The beer celebrates Women’s Equality Day — which is Aug. 26 — and commemorates the passage of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, according to the news release. There are 39 words in the amendment, which passed women’s suffrage in 1920.
The 8.1-percent ABV fruity saison was designed and brewed by the five women on staff at Virginia Beer Co.
It will be served both on-draft and in a 16-ounce can.
“The idea was first broached by one of our Brewers [Brad Adams],” taproom manager and business developer Luci Legaspi said in a prepared statement. “We have a diverse group that makes up the Virginia Beer Co. family and we celebrate everyone’s ideas and identity. We have 5 women on the team and each of us loved the idea of spending a day in the brewery putting our touch on a VBC brew. We all had our own ideas for a recipe, but we all agreed that we definitely wanted to do something big and bold.”
One day later, on Saturday, the brewery tapped a new golden ale for a collaboration with the Kiwanis Club of Williamsburg. The new brew is “smooth and crisp” and helps kick off the brewery’s third-annual Crab Pickin’ in the Beer Garden seafood event.
The ale was brewed to celebrate the Kiwanis Club’s 40th-annual Shrimp Feast XL fundraiser and is called “Shrimpin’ Ain’t Easy.”
A portion of proceeds from every pint of Shrimpin’ Ain’t Easy sold will be donated to the Kiwanis Club.
“The Virginia Beer Company has been proud to be the exclusive craft beer provider for Kiwanis Shrimp Feast since the brewery opened in 2016,” brewery cofounder Robby Willey said in the news release. “We love working with Kiwanis on this event, one that supports a number of amazing organizations in the community such as Dream Catchers and Camp Kesem. As this is the 40th anniversary of Shrimp Feast we thought a special brew was in order, and a seafood fest at the brewery seemed like a great time to kick off Shrimp Feast season.”
Shrimpin’ Ain’t Easy will also be available at the Shrimp Fest XL fundraiser, which is scheduled for 4-7 p.m. Sept. 14 at the Jamestown 4-H Educational Center.
Tickets for Shrimp Feat XL can be found Saturday at Virginia Beer Co., 401 Second St., at Suter Print at 4399 Ironbound Road, or online on the Kiwanis Club of Williamsburg website.
