President Donald J. Trump and several other politicians attended commemorative events at Jamestown Settlement Tuesday, on the 400th anniversary of the organization of the first representative legislative assembly in the New World.

In 1619, Gov. Sir George Yeardley, his four councilors and 22 elected burgesses met to conduct business in what is known as the first practice of democracy in the New World.
Tuesday’s celebration is just one piece of a yearlong series of events, programs and exhibits meant to commemorate important events that occurred in 1619, including the arrival of the first recorded Africans in the New World, the creation of the first representative assembly, recruitment of women to join male settlers at Jamestown and the first official Thanksgiving in North America.
