Stratford University plans to close three of its college campuses in Southeast Virginia.

“We are not liable financially for it, said David Brand, vice president of academic affairs for the university, noting 67 percent of its students are online. “It doesn’t make sense for use as a business to keep on doing it.”

“We actually not really closing right now,” Brand said.

The three campuses in Newport News, Virginia Beach and Glen Allen will continue to teach two more terms before closing in mid-October, Brand said.

Stratford University was established in 1976 and is known for offering both on-campus and online classes for its students.

Brand said the university will offer 25 percent off tuition to any students affected by the campus closing until they graduate and will honor students with athletic scholarships, until they graduate as well.

“We think we have a great program and the students seem to be happy,” Brand said. “I think that we will have some sense of community.”
