VIRGINIA BEACH — The weather has something else planned – organizers of Something in the Water cancelled the opening because of severe weather.
Organizers tweeted the cancellation at 7:05 p.m. Friday — nine acts were scheduled to perform. It was originally planned to restart — after heavy rain — at around 8 p.m.
“Due to the impact caused by severe weather at the beach venue, we are unable to put on a show tonight. Can’t wait to see you tomorrow,” according to the tweet.
Pharrell Williams tweeted: “VA Beach, the weather wasn’t great today but it’s clearing up and we’re excited to see you first thing in the morning. Thank you for hanging in there….we will not disappoint. Thanks everyone who showed up today, every artist, every company and everyone involved.”
It was unclear whether the Friday acts will play Saturday.
Virginia Beach was part of a severe thunderstorm warning Friday as of 12:15 p.m. The warning was set to expire around 9 p.m. according to the National Weather Service in Wakefield.
Meteorologists said the worst threat will be winds that could gust up to 60 mph. Rain could be heavy at times.
According to AccuWeather, some locations that will experience flooding include Virginia Beach, Virginia Wesleyan University, Regent University, Great Bridge, Kempsville, Norfolk, Chesapeake, Fentress, Princess Anne, Rudee Heights, Princess Anne Plaza, Sigma, Pungo, Greenbrier, Bayside, Dam Neck, Hickory, Mount Pleasant, Sandbridge Beach and Oceana NAS.
Additional rainfall of one to two inches is expected over the area.
This additional rain will result in minor flooding.
