If you’ve driven near the intersection of Merrimac Trail and Penniman Road recently, you may have seen some new activity.

In between Emily’s Donuts and the Sunoco gas station, crews have demolished at least two buildings and cut down numerous trees to make way for incoming development.

What’s coming? Dollar General.

The property, 107 Wickre St., backs up to Merrimac Trail. It was purchased by Par 5 Development for $397,500 in November 2018.

Par 5 Development Group “is a commercial real estate development and management company serving North Carolina and Virginia,” according to its Twitter page.

James City County Planning Director Paul Holt said the developer is working on its application and is “pretty far along.”

Holt said he does not yet have a timeline for the project.

The property already is zoned for business, Holt said, so the Planning Commission and Board of Supervisors will not need to review or approve the application.

The project instead is going through the administrative review and plan and permit approval process with planning staff.

The site plan has been approved and the building permit plans are in for review, Holt said.
