Here’s where furloughed federal workers can get a free meal during the shutdown

VIRGINIA BEACH — The Sheriff’s Office will provide free meals for federal workers and their families during shutdown.

In partnership with Summit Food Service, free meals will be provided to federal workers who have been furloughed or working without pay and their families starting Jan. 21, according to a news release from the Sheriff’s Office.

Resources permitting, the program will be ongoing throughout the partial federal government shutdown. Dinner will be served from 5-7 p.m. at the Virginia Beach Law Enforcement Training Academy on the following dates, assuming the shutdown continues:

  • Monday, Jan. 21
  • Tuesday, Jan. 22
  • Monday, Jan. 28
  • Wednesday, Jan. 30
  • Friday, Feb. 1

Additional dates will be announced on Facebook and Twitter if the shutdown continues and as facility availability and resources allow.

Federal workers who have been furloughed or working without pay need only present their federal work ID to participate, according to the news release. The meals will be provided at no cost to taxpayers thanks to a generous donation from Summit, which provides food services to the Virginia Beach Correctional Center.

“We recognize a need in our community and we’re stepping up to meet it,” Sheriff Ken Stolle said. “This is an opportunity for us to break bread together and, more importantly, help those in need who want to work, but can’t, or are working without pay and are worried about feeding their families.”

“We’re grateful for Summit’s generosity, which is making this program possible, and call on our community to step up to keep it going if the shutdown persists,” Stolle added.

The food will be served by volunteers from the Sheriff’s Office.

Depending on the duration of the shutdown, additional donations and sponsorships may be needed to continue the program.

Organizations and businesses interested in helping should contact Public Information Officer Kathy Hieatt or call 757-385-8446.
