A television comedy show set in a “Colonial-times” theme park — and loosely based on Colonial Williamsburg, according to published reports — could be coming to CBS.
It’s called “America, U.S.A.,” according to online magazine Deadline Hollywood.
According to Deadline, CBS has put the show into development.
If the show is given an air date or is filmed, the single-camera workplace comedy will be set at a Colonial-times theme park called America, U.S.A. The show will not be political, but the setting will offer “an opportunity to tell stories that could potentially resonate with the absurd post-truth world we live in today,” Deadline reported in late November.
The show is produced by husband-wife duo Michael Kramer and “TURN” actress Lilli Birdsell.
Deadline reports Birdsell was inspired to create the show as she was doing research for her role as Martha Washington in AMC’s “TURN: Washington’s Spies.”
“TURN” was filmed in the Williamsburg area several times during its four seasons, and centers on Abraham Woodhall, a farmer on British-occupied Long Island who turns to espionage with a band of childhood friends.
“America, U.S.A.” is directed by “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” director Alex Reid, who won an Emmy for outstanding writing for “Malcolm in the Middle.”
Colonial Williamsburg spokesman Joe Straw said the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation is aware of the project from “reporting by trade media.”
“Colonial Williamsburg offers guests a place where all of America’s origin stories can be told,” Straw said. “Ours is a free society and like any institution, historical interpretation is fair game for satire. We strive, however, to communicate our work’s relevance, so we always hope that entertainment associated with us reflects the courage and credibility of our efforts.”
