For thrifty shoppers in the area, a change in route will come with the new year as the CHKD Thrift Store looks for a new location.
The Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters Thrift Store moved to a location across from Midtown Row in April, at 161 Monticello Avenue, said Brynn Jacoby, director of marketing for Broad Street Realty, owners of Midtown Row.
There are 25 CHKD Thrift Store locations in Hampton Roads and Richmond, each providing donated items for purchase. These stores bring more than $2 million to the hospital each year, which provides health care to children in the community, the hospital’s website said.
“The thrift store moved to its current location in May because the shopping center it was in was sold, and they were asked to move,” said Elizabeth Earley, public relations director for CHKD.
But they won’t be in their new location long.
Early said the store will stay in its current space until Dec. 31 but has not confirmed a new location.
“The store is in the negotiation stage for a new location, but a lease has not been finalized yet,” she said. “(It) is expected to be finalized in time to move later this month.”
CHKD’s move is a result of the new development of the shopping center by Broad Street Realty. Jacoby said the location the thrift store had previously occupied is slated for demolition as part of a large-scale plan to bring in new businesses to the center.
“We look forward to seeing a diverse mix of local, regional and national tenants geared towards food and beverage and experience,” Jacoby said.
