WILLIAMSBURG — Several local organizations will gather Saturday to commemorate the legacy of late U.S. Rep. John Lewis and advocate for voting rights.

Williamsburg-JCC Indivisible, the League of Women Voters-Williamsburg and the Williamsburg Unitarian Universalists will host “Good Trouble Lives On – John Lewis Action” at 2 p.m. July 18 at the Williamsburg-James City County Courthouse, 5201 Monticello Ave.

Organizers said the event marks six years since Lewis’ death and aims to continue the civil rights leader’s legacy while encouraging civic engagement among future generations.

Scheduled speakers include Denise Harrington, president of the League of Women Voters-Williamsburg; Robin Jester Wootton, director of religious education for the Williamsburg Unitarian Universalists; and Charles Gates, president of the York-James City-Williamsburg NAACP.

Lewis, a longtime congressman from Georgia and a key figure in the civil rights movement, frequently referred to activism and civic engagement as making “good trouble.”

In a statement, organizers said the event is intended to highlight ongoing concerns about voting rights and encourage community participation in the democratic process.
