The Virginia Department of Transportation is trying to make Thanksgiving travel a little less hectic.

Starting Wednesday, VDOT will suspend some road work and lane closures in certain areas of the state, the department said in a news release.

The suspension will run from noon Wednesday to noon Monday, Nov. 26.

Some semi-permanent work zones will still have lane closures in place, but the I-64 widening project’s closures in the Historic Triangle will be suspended, VDOT said.

To aid travelers, VDOT also has an interactive travel trends map which shows peak congestion periods on Virginia roadways.

Its predictions are not perfect, but the map can help drivers plan their travel around the area’s historically busiest times, VDOT said.

The heaviest congestion will mostly likely occur from mid-morning to evening on Tuesday, as well as on Saturday.

VDOT also has several ways to check the traffic as it happens: using the VDOT 511 app, visiting the 511Virginia.org website and calling 511 from any phone.

Here are some additional driving safety tips from VDOT:

  • Get a designated driver if you plan to drink
  • Wear your seatbelt
  • Keep your eyes on the road
  • Don’t drive distracted
  • Take a break if you feel drowsy
