A clerk at the Clarion Hotel at the 3000 block of Richmond Road was arrested after allegedly refusing a room to a woman unless she would have sex with him, according to reports from Williamsburg Police.

At 4 a.m. on Oct. 10, Williamsburg Police were dispatched to the hotel after a woman called to report Kashif Ur Rehnan Sheikh, 35, propositioned and fondled her, said police spokesman Maj. Greg Riley.

The 22-year-old woman told police that when she approached Sheikh, the hotel’s on-duty clerk at the time, to check into a room, he refused unless she would have sex with him. Sheikh then inappropriately touched the woman, Riley said.

Riley said the woman immediately went outside the hotel and called police. Officers arrived on the scene and interviewed Sheikh, but didn’t arrest him that day.

“In certain types of investigations it’s not uncommon that the officer will want to take his time gathering more information instead of simply making the arrest,” Riley said.

The officer then requested video surveillance from the hotel and on Oct. 14 found probable cause to get warrants for sexual battery and solicitation of prostitution, Riley said.

Sheikh was arrested at his home in the 7000 block of Richmond Road. He was taken to the Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail later that day.

Sheikh was released on bond Monday. He’s scheduled to appear at the Williamsburg-James City County Courthouse at 8:30 a.m. on Oct. 23, according to court records.
