NORFOLK — A nationally known muralist is bringing her feminist, inclusion-themed public art to Norfolk’s NEON District.
Lori Pratico, an artist and educator, will be in Norfolk next week to complete a mural as part of “Girl Noticed,” a community mural project “traveling the globe to build and maintain a world better informed about the positive impact the simple act of ‘noticing’ a girl,” according to Pratico’s website.
Norfolk’s mural will be painted on the northern wall of the Jones CPA Group building near the corner of Bousch Street and Olney Road.
To date, Pratico has featured 24 women in murals throughout 10 states.
The murals are temporary, which add a sense of urgency to the viewers’ “noticing,” according to a news release from Downtown Norfolk Council.
The project extends well beyond the wall — Pratico hosts community workshops and presentations in every state she visits and also awards scholarships to individuals and organizations to continue their work educating and empowering women locally, according to the news release.
As part of Pratico’s outreach, she will be hosting a workshop with Teens With a Purpose on Monday and will giving a free public lecture at Old Dominion University’s new education building at noon on Oct. 19.
