There’s going to be a benefit walk in Virginia Beach for this little-known disorder in children

VIRGINIA BEACH — The 2018 Walk for Apraxia to benefit children with apraxia of speech will be on Oct. 14 at Mount Trashmore.

Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. with the walk beginning at 9 a.m.

Childhood Apraxia of Speech is a very challenging and complicated neurological speech disorder in children, according to a news release from Childhood Apraxia of Speech Association of North America.

This little-known disorder makes it difficult or impossible for children to accurately produce sounds, syllables, and/or words despite having a good understanding of language.

The Walk for Apraxia is held across the country as a means to heighten awareness and funding in the hopes that all children with apraxia may have access to the support they need to find their voices.

“We walk for awareness and we walk for help,” said Aaron Arky, walk coordinator. “When we first learned of Apraxia, we were unaware of how big an impact it would have on Elliott’s (child of Arky) life and unaware of how much an issue it is in our society. We feel blessed that there is an organization that helps children and parents to understand the issue and provides methods to help the children improve. The walks are a great fundraiser and a great way to bring awareness.”

Raising awareness is one of the most tangible ways that communities can help children with apraxia thrive, Arky said.

The Walk is open to all adults and children. All proceeds will benefit important apraxia programs and research of Apraxia Kids.
