Here’s a list of closings and cancellations because of Hurricane Florence

With Hurricane Florence baring down on the East Coast, many in Hampton Roads are taking precautions.

Here is a list of major closings, cancellations, and reschedules from around the Southside:

Virginia Beach

  • Virginia Beach Public Schools are closed for students until further notice. Staff should report on time on Tuesday; however, staff who live in “Zone A” should discuss with their supervisor if they are unable to report.
  • All Tidewater Community College campuses will be closed on Tuesday, Sept. 11, “and will remain closed until further notice,” according to TCC’s website.
  • Cape Henry Collegiate will be closed Tuesday but offices are still open.
  • The Neptune Festival’s 22nd Annual Fall Wine Festival has been canceled, along with Tuesday night’s scheduled fireworks. Ticket holders for the wine festival will be refunded in the same payment form they used to buy their tickets, according to a news release.
  • Regent University will close at 2 p.m. Tuesday and will reopen Monday, Sept. 17.
  • Virginia Wesleyan University has canceled all classes on Thursday through Saturday.
  • The Military Aviation Museum will be closed Wednesday, Sept. 12 through Sunday, Sept. 16. All events and activities at the museum during this time frame will be rescheduled.
  • 757 Battle of the Beers, scheduled for Saturday at Camp Pendleton, has been rescheduled to Oct. 20.
  • Virginia Beach General District Court, Circuit Court, Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court and their clerks’ offices closed Wednesday through Friday.
  • Commonwealth Attorney’s Office
  • Wahab Public Law Library closed Wednesday through Friday.
  • Emergency Medical Systems training classes are canceled until further notice.
  • Virginia Aquarium — South Building will remain closed until further notice. The Main Building will remain open Wednesday and Thursday. The harbor seals and komodo dragons may be relocated to more secure locations away from windows, and might not be available for viewing. Aquarium boat trips have been canceled from through Sunday, as well as sea turtles behind the scenes. The Virginia Aquarium will be closed on Friday.
  • Adventure Park at Virginia Aquarium closed for duration of storm, will reopen when conditions allow.
  • Virginia Beach History Museums will be closed Thursday through Sunday.
  • Chesapeake Bay Center Visitor Information location inside First Landing State Park will be closed from Wednesday through Saturday, may reopen on Sept. 16, if the park is open.
  • Farmers Market– individual merchants may choose to close during the inclement weather, call ahead for availability. Hampton Roads Food Truck Rodeo scheduled for Wednesday has been canceled, is rescheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 26. The Friday Night Hoedown for Friday has been canceled.
  • Virginia Beach Recreation Centers are currently opening as scheduled, and programs and services are under normal operations (exception: Bayside Rec Center is closed for maintenance).
  •  Adult league games are canceled effective Tuesday through Friday.
  • Movie Night showing of “Homeward Bound” at Mount Trashmore, scheduled for Saturday and the rain date of Sunday have been canceled.
  • All park rentals, picnic shelters and park events canceled through Sunday.
  • Munden Point Park, Little Island Park, Pungo Ferry Landing Park, Sandbridge Beach Facility and Red Wing Park closed until Zone A evacuation order is lifted.
  • Sports facilities used for rental/tournament play will be canceled beginning Wednesday afternoon through Sunday.
  • Tennis light usage will continue through Wednesday. All on-demand usage at tennis courts canceled until early next week.
  • Virginia Beach Animal Care and Adoption Center will be closed to the public for reclaims, adoptions and surrenders on Thursday and Friday. Saturday will be dependent on storm impacts. The only services the shelter will have available on Thursday and Friday is emergency pet sheltering for residents in evacuation Zone A.
  • All Virginia Beach Public Library programs and meeting room reservations are canceled from Thursday through Sunday.
  • Bank On class on Saturday at Oceanfront Library canceled.

Norfolk

  • Norfolk Public Schools have canceled classes on Tuesday, Sept. 11, but 12-month personnel should report on time. Schools will also be closed on Wednesday, Sept. 12, and only essential personnel will need to report.
  • Norfolk State University will close Tuesday at 12:30 p.m. and will remain closed through Monday.
  • Norfolk Collegiate School is closed until further notice.
  • Old Dominion University is closed from Tuesday to Sunday, and the campus will be evacuated Tuesday.
  • All Tidewater Community College campuses will be closed on Tuesday, Sept. 11, “and will remain closed until further notice,” according to TCC’s website.
  • Norfolk City Council meeting originally scheduled for 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday has been rescheduled to 1 p.m. Tuesday. Formal Session will only be held, there will be no informal session.
  • Waterside District will close Tuesday and remain closed until weather conditions are safe.
  • Norfolk Historical Society’s Louis L. Guy History Series program, scheduled for 7 p.m. Wednesday, has been canceled. It is rescheduled for Oct. 10.
  • Outwork757, an LGBTQ consumer and career expo, scheduled for Saturday at ODU’S Ted Constant Convocation Center has been canceled. A reschedule date is being planned.
  • Norwegian Viking ship, Draken Harald Hårfagre (Draken) stopover this weekend has been canceled.
  • The Commonwealth Coastal Classic has been rescheduled from noon to 5 p.m. on Oct. 20.

Other closure:

Saint Leo University is closing all of its education centers in Virginia with the exception of its Fort Lee location, due to the threat of Hurricane Florence.

Classes are canceled beginning Tuesday through Saturday. The

University officials anticipate reopening the Virginia locations on Monday, Sept. 17.

Saint Leo University will continue to monitor Hurricane Florence. Students, faculty, and staff are asked to check the Saint Leo website (www.saintleo.edu) for updates.

The Saint Leo locations that are closed are:

  • Chesapeake Education Center, 1434 Crossways Blvd., Suite 175, Chesapeake.
  • Fort Eustis Education Office, 1500 Madison Ave., U.S. Army Education Center, Fort Eustis.
  •  Langley Education Office, 450 Weyland Road, Langley AFB.
  •  Newport News Education Center, One BayPort Way, Suite 160, Newport News.
  •  South Hampton Roads Education Center at JEB-Little Creek, 1481 D. St., Building 3016, Virginia Beach
  •  Norfolk Education Office, Naval Station Norfolk, 1680 Gilbert St., Building E, Suite 101, Norfolk.
  • Oceana Education Office, Naval Air Station Oceana, 902 E. Ave., Building 531.

In addition, Saint Leo University closed its South Carolina locations and classes are canceled. Saint Leo’s North Charleston, Shaw Air Force Base, and Sumter locations are closed Tuesday and will remain closed through Friday.
