VIRGINIA BEACH — The Sheriff’s Office here is warning the public about a possible scam that recently surfaced.
“In the last day, we have received at least 10 phone calls from people in the community who have been contacted by individuals posing as members of the Virginia Beach Sheriff’s Office,” according to a Facebook post by the Sheriff’s Office. “The caller says that the person has missed a court date and needs to meet with an investigator to avoid arrest.”
Sheriff’s officials said “the calls are not coming from us and we encourage anyone who receives one to hang up.”
The Sheriff’s Office will “never ask for money,” including prepaid cards. They strongly advise residents to never meet “with anyone who claims to be from law enforcement at any location other than an official police or sheriff’s office building.”

“While we’re unsure what these callers’ aim is, we anticipate that it is to scam people out of money and/or could put people in danger of becoming robbery victims,” said Kathy Hieatt, spokeswoman for the Sheriff’s Office.
