Here’s how you can sharpen your gardening skills

The Virginia Cooperative Extension is looking for volunteers to help educate the public on general gardening practices.

The Extension is offering two master gardener classes, one in-person and one virtual hybrid course.

The classes will cover topics such as basic botany, insects, trees, shrubs, pruning, lawns and handling pesticides, according to a news release from the City of Newport News.

Both courses cost $150 each, which will cover course material fees and a background screening.

The in-person course runs From 9 a.m. until noon on Tuesdays and Thursdays from Sept. 4 through Nov. 14. There also are an additional three Saturday sessions. 

The in-person classes will be at  600 Thimble Shoals Blvd., Suite 210, in Newport News.

The virtual class is being offered from Aug. 15 through Nov. 14. Lessons are online in addition to in-person sessions on Wednesday evenings. There also are three additional Saturday sessions.

The virtual class in-person sessions will be at 8500 George Washington Memorial Highway in York County.
