VIRGINIA BEACH — Tidewater Community College’s Visual Arts Center will host the solo exhibition “Kally Malcom: Staged Presence” from July 7 through Aug. 29.
Admission is free and open to the public.
Artist and assistant professor at the University of North Florida, Malcom, will be showcasing three distinct collections of photographs. All collections will be set up in an unusual combination of objects. The goal is to project imagery that is both narrative and symbolic, according to a news release from TCC.
- Pictograph — a series of subtle stories will be represented through common objects, vivid colors, and patterns, all as metaphors of the artists’ memories.
- Remains — moving away from vivid colors, the artist will feature black and white pinhole series that “contrasts the complexity of the natural world with the surety of our constructed interiors.” The collection will showcase still life paintings to convey the dangers and uncertainty of the world.
- Native Sun: The Flora of Sawmill Slough Preserve — Using the lumen photographic process to showcase the delicate flora samples collected within a 382-acre habitat, this collection was created primarily to push the boundaries of science and art, rather than for pure aesthetic results.
