Update 3:30 p.m. Monday: The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for eastern Virginia from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday.
Williamsburg is heating up this week, but don’t worry, temperatures will taper off by the end of the week, the National Weather Service said.
Monday’s heat index will reach about 102 or 103 degrees Fahrenheit this afternoon, but the heath index for the area Tuesday will likely reach 105 degrees, National Weather Service meteorologist Mike Rusnak said.
Tuesday morning may begin with some patchy fog in areas, Rusnak said.
Both Monday and Tuesday share highs around 94 degrees, but increasing humidity Tuesday will cause the afternoon to feel hotter, he added. The National Weather Service has issued a hazardous weather outlook for Williamsburg Tuesday and Wednesday, and said there may be a heat advisory for some areas where the heat index exceeds 105 degrees.
The Virginia Department of Emergency Management has released a tip sheet to avoid heat-related illness during heat waves. Tips include making sure a home’s cooling system is working, covering windows to keep light and heat out, avoiding strenuous work and drinking water.
There may be some relief from the heat late Tuesday afternoon, however.
Strong thunderstorms may roll over Williamsburg from the north around 5 or 6 p.m. Tuesday. The storms carry the potential for “damaging” wind guests.
Wednesday will be hot as well, but not as hot as Tuesday, Rusnak said. The high is forecast to reach 92 degrees, with less humidity.
Afternoon thunderstorms may also develop Wednesday afternoon.
Daytime highs will drop into the 80s as the week goes on, Rusnak said.
