Changes in traffic patterns on Interstate 64 will continue this weekend and next week.

Traffic shifts are scheduled as part of the interstate widening project, the Virginia Department of Transportation said.

Traffic will be moved from the existing travel lanes to new lanes constructed on the interstate’s median. The shifts will allow for the reconstruction of the two outside lanes.

Both eastbound and westbound lanes will be affected.

The first shift will begin early Sunday (May 6) on I-64 west from exit 243B for Route 143 to the western limits of the project near exit 242 for Route 199.

The shifts will also be accompanied by ramp closures beginning at 11 p.m. Saturday (May 5) through 9 a.m. Sunday. Detours will be in place with signs directing drivers where to go.

The exit 243A off-ramp from I-64 west to Route 60 near Busch Gardens and the exit 243B off-ramp from westbound I-64 to Route 143 west will be closed alongside the traffic shifts.

VDOT also scheduled nightly single-lane closures as part of the ongoing I-64 widening project.

Signed detours will be in place.
