The Historic Yorktown waterfront will be a hub for artistic expression on Sunday at the fifth annual Art at the River juried art show.
“Being set up along the river is simply a wonderful experience for both artist and patron alike,” said Pembroke Bryant, a jewelry designer whose work be part of the show. “I always return to my studio with my creative juices overflowing after being among so many wonderfully talented individuals.”
Local artists will have the opportunity to display their work along the riverfront from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. The Fifes and Drums of Yorktown will open the exhibit, and Lorrie Powell and Robbie Meade of Sojorn will provide music from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Food and beverages will be for sale throughout the day by Creekside Catering and Indulge Bakery and Bistro, and the Hampton Roads Winery will offer wine tastings.
The 45 artists featured in the show were chosen by Ginny Lascara, owner of Black Dog Gallery, and Oskana Davis, an artist and instructor in York County.
The art will range from hand-woven baskets to watercolor paintings to nature photography.
Artists’ work will be judged for the chance to win prizes valued at more than $3,000. Awards will be given for 2D and 3D work and photography, and there will be honorable mentions and a people’s choice award as well.
This year, the best in show award will be given in memory of Art at the River founder Susan H. Powell, who died last June.
Artists will be judged by fellow artists Rita Gloub, a former York County art teacher; Gloria Coker, a previous courtroom illustrator’ and Yvonne Wilson Boone, an award-winning watercolorist.
The judges’ decisions will be based on a number of criteria.
“I look for creativity, command of materials, composition, and presentation,” Boone said.
There will be a separate exhibit inside the Freight Shed featuring 43 pieces of art from York High School students. The student art will be judged on the same criteria as the professional art.
The event is presented by the Art at the River Committee in conjunction with York County and the Yorktown Foundation, with support from the Celebrate Yorktown Committee, the Economic Development Authority and the York County and Williamsburg Area arts commissions.
