This event will honor Norfolk’s fallen police officers, families

NORFOLK — Since 1962, the week of May 15 has been designated National Police Week by Congress.

On May 17, the Norfolk Police Department will have its annual Peace Officers’ Memorial Day Service. The event will be at 9:30 a.m. in front of the City Hall complex, 810 Union St.

NPD holds a service each year to honor the memory of the 39 Norfolk police officers “who made the ultimate sacrifice while working to keep citizens safe and proudly wearing the badge,” according to a news release from the city.

Norfolk Police also will pay tribute to surviving family members of their fallen officers.

Mayor Kenneth Alexander will provide the official proclamation.

The ceremony is free and open to the public. There will be a brief reception after the ceremony.

City officials said that in the event of inclement weather, the service will be held inside City Hall, in City Council Chambers.
