NORFOLK — New details are being released about the recent arrest of a suspect in connection with a triple shooting that left one man dead in Hampton.
The tip that led to last week’s arrest of 31-year-old Donte Demille Hampton, of Suffolk, came from inside the Norfolk City Jail, according to the Norfolk Sheriff’s Office.
NSO has a special unit inside the jail called the Security Threat Unit, which gathers intelligence on criminals and gang members in jail.
After the triple shooting in the 100 block of Kathann Drive on March 25, detectives working the investigation had information that a gang member named “Messiah” was involved, but they didn’t know his real name or whereabouts, authorities said.
“Investigators reached out to the Norfolk Sheriff’s Office STU to help identify the suspect. The STU informed detectives that a former Norfolk City Jail inmate went by the name “Messiah,” and that he is a high-ranking gangster disciple from Chicago,” said Karen Pinkston, spokeswoman for the NSO.
“Messiah” later was identified as Hampton, Pinkston said.
U.S. Marshals tracked Hampton down and arrested him. He is charged with one count of malicious wounding, one count of attempted malicious wounding, one count of shooting within an occupied dwelling, one count of discharging a firearm in a public place, one count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, two counts of use of a firearm in commission of a felony and one count of conspiracy to commit a felony.
Another man, Willie Darez Milligan Jr., 29, of Newport News, has been charged in connection with the shooting.
According to police, Hampton called Milligan and Anthony Carel Floyd Jr. following an argument in the Kathann Drive home. Floyd and Milligan went inside and exchanged gunfire with an unidentified 21-year-old man. All three were hit, and Floyd died at the scene, police said.
Miligan is charged with with attempted malicious wounding, burglary while armed, shooting into an occupied dwelling, shooting in public and four counts of use of a firearm in commission of a felony.
