One person was taken to the hospital Thursday after emergency responders rescued several people in canoes on the York River.

The James City County Fire Department responded to a 911 call just before noon Thursday after a caller reported there were several canoes “in distress” on the York River off Croaker Landing, according to a James City County news release.

According to the release, high winds had made it difficult to get back to shore.

The fire department, James City-Bruton Volunteer Fire Department and York County Fire & Life Safety, all responded to the scene, finding 11 people in canoes on the river.

One of the canoes had capsized. All people, including the two in the water, were wearing life jackets.

Several canoes required emergency responder assistance to make it back to shore. Seven people total were rescued by responders, the release said.

One person was taken by ambulance to Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center due to “concerns about exposure to the elements,” the release stated. As of 4:30 p.m., the person was described as being in “good” condition.
