Rabid raccoon killed by dog in Norfolk neighborhood

NORFOLK — A rabid raccoon was killed by a dog in the Roland Park area of Norfolk last week.

The dog killed the raccoon in the 500 block of Summers Drive on March 3. Officials tested the raccoon for rabies, and the results came back positive on March 7, according to a news release.

Officials don’t believe any humans were exposed to the raccoon, and the dog was vaccinated for rabies; however, if you’ve been bitten or scratched by a raccoon in the Roland Park area call the Norfolk Department of Public Health at 757-683-2712.

“Rabies is a deadly virus and area residents are reminded to keep pets up-to-date on their vaccinations,” Environmental Health Manager Norman Grefe in a news release.
