David Cohn named CAA Player of the Week for a second time

For the second time this season, William & Mary men’s basketball senior David Cohn was named the Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Week, the league announced on Monday. Cohn averaged 19.5 points, 10 assists, five rebounds and two steals per game in helping the Tribe to wins over UNCW and Charleston to close out the regular season.

Cohn, who shared the award with Drexel’s Tramaine Isabell, is the sixth CAA player to earn the award on multiple occasions in 2017-18 and the second Tribe student-athlete.

Cohn scored a career-high 30 points on 9-of-12 shooting, including 2-of-3 from 3-point range, and a perfect 10-of-10 at the free throw line in the win over CAA regular season champion Charleston. He also dished out nine assists compared to just one turnover in 45 minutes.

The Elmhurst, Ill., native reached a pair of career milestones in the Senior Day victory posting both his 1,000th point and 500th assist. In the win over UNCW, Cohn just missed a double-double with nine points, 11 assists, five rebounds and three steals. He dished out seven of his 11 helpers in the final 20 minutes to help W&M overcome a nine-point halftime deficit. It was his CAA-leading sixth double-digit assist game of the season.

Cohn also earned the weekly award on Nov. 27 after scoring 25 points and dishing out nine assists in a 79-77 win over Old Dominion. Sophomore Nathan Knight also earned a pair of CAA Player of the Week honors on Jan. 2 and Jan. 8 to give W&M two players with multiple weekly honors. Charleston’s Grant Riller, Drexel’s Tramaine Isabell and Hofstra’s Justin Wright-Foreman have earned the CAA weekly on three occasions this season, while Charleston’s Joe Chealey, like Cohn and Knight, garnered two awards.

The catalyst of one of the nation’s top offenses, Cohn is the only player in the country with shooting percentages of 50 from the field, 40 from 3-point range and 90 from the free throw line. His free throw percentage of 92.3 percent ranks sixth nationally. Including his 10-of-10 effort vs. Charleston, he has connected on 38 straight at the foul line, which is the second-best mark in CAA history. He leads the CAA and ranks 12th nationally at 6.7 assists per game, while averaging 14 points per game.

The Tribe travels to North Charleston, S.C, to compete in the 2018 CAA Championship, March 3-6, at the North Charleston Coliseum. W&M is the No. 4 seed in the tournament and plays No. 5 seed Towson at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 4.
