A marker has been placed on the grave of one of James City County’s Revolutionary War veterans.

The James City County Historical Commission placed a marker on the grave of William Lightfoot, according to a county press release.

He was buried in the Lightfoot area of the county, which is named after Lightfoot’s family, Principal Planner Ellen Cook said.

Lightfoot enlisted as a 2nd Lieutenant in 1777, and is one of only two known Revolutionary War veterans buried in private cemeteries within the county.

After the war he served as a delegate in the Virginia House of Delegates from 1799 through 1808.

Lightfoot died in 1809.
