VIRGINIA BEACH — Colder weather is approaching. The National Weather Service says temperatures could dip into the 20s Sunday night.
So you can bundle up under a cozy blanket and enjoy some hot chocolate without worrying about a pipe in your home bursting, Virginia Beach Public Utilities released some important tips to remember.
Before cold temperatures arrive
- Insulate exposed pipes throughout your home with heat tape or foam tubing. The more insulation, the better the protection.
- Seal leaks that let cold air into your home near exposed pipes.
- Disconnect garden hoses and drain outdoor pipes. Turn the supply valve off and cover any exposed pipes and faucets with insulation.
When freezing temperatures are forecast
- Allow a steady stream of cold water to flow from the highest faucet in your home because moving water won’t freeze.
- Keep your thermostat at the same temperature during the day and night so that your pipes stay warm even during the cooler overnight temperatures.
- Open your cabinet doors so that heat can reach pipes under sinks.
When going out of town
- Shut off and drain your water system. But be aware that if you have a sprinkler system in your home, it may be deactivated when you turn off the water.
- Set your thermostat no lower than 55 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Ask a friend or neighbor to check on your home daily.
