A home in the Riverview Plantation subdivision was significantly damaged Friday night after a fire started in the garage and spread to the attic, fire officials said.

James City County firefighters responded to a structure fire on Shirley Drive around 9:40 p.m., according to a James City County news release.

Crews arrived to find fire in the garage and attic of the two-story home, then started fighting the fire from the outside of the residence.

The home’s occupants had exited the building by the time the fire department arrived, the release said.

Firefighters from James City County and York County Fire & Life Safety marked the fire under control at 11:45 p.m., nearly two hours after they arrived on scene, the release said.

Crews remained on scene until 2 a.m.

The house sustained significant damage from fire and smoke, the release said.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
