VIRGINIA BEACH — A woman who was hired to take care of a medically incompetent man is accused of stealing more than $36,000 from him, according to court documents.

Arteisha Williams, 37, is accused of stealing from the man while working for Visiting Angels, a company that provides the elderly with in-home health care, according to documents filed in Virginia Beach Circuit Court.

The man was declared incompetent in March and his daughter took over as his legal guardian and assumed control over his financial matters.

She hired Visiting Angels, located at 1700 Pleasure House Road, to come to his home and provide medical treatment, court documents state.

Williams was hired as his care manager, and during that time she allegedly took him to Navy Federal Credit Union and helped him open up a checking account without telling his daughter. Williams allegedly used money from that account for herself, court documents state.

In May, the man’s daughter ended Williams’ service and moved her dad to Wesleyan Gardens Assisted Living Facility. She discovered the checking account when looking at his banking documents and reported it to the police, according to court documents.

Williams allegedly deposited a check for $36,790 from the man’s account on June 30 via an ATM at the Bank of America located at 1091 Independence Blvd., court documents state.

Williams was arrested by the Virginia Beach Police Department on Sept. 26 and charged with five counts of obtaining money by false pretenses, two counts of exploiting a mentally incapacitated person, credit card fraud, obtaining a credit card without larceny, conspiracy and forgery.

She is scheduled to appear in Norfolk General District Court on Jan. 16, 2018.
