The Virginia State Police have identified the person killed in a crash near mile marker 227 on Interstate 64 Tuesday afternoon as a 47-year-old Richmond woman.

Darlene Therese Harris, 47, of the 1100 block of James Street in Richmond, was traveling westbound on I-64 around 12:34 when the crash occurred, Virginia State Police Sgt. Michelle Anaya said.

Police believe Harris’ 2004 Honda Odyssey was traveling at a high rate of speed and crashed into the back of a 2010 Toyota 4Runner, which had slowed down due to an accident ahead, Anaya said.

After hitting the 4Runner, Harris ran off the roadway and struck a concrete abutment, causing the vehicle to roll several times into the tree line next to the interstate, Anaya said.

Harris was not wearing her seatbelt and was ejected from the van. She died from her injuries at the scene, police said.

The 4Runner was driven by Gentry Zaugg and carried two passengers, Anaya said. The vehicle sustained “minor” damage.

Police do not believe alcohol was a factor in the crash, but the incident is still under investigation, police said.
