Police: Man attempts to eat drugs during traffic stop

A James City County man has been charged with obstruction of justice after he allegedly tried to ingest heroin he was in possession of during a traffic stop Sept. 15.

Preston Graves, 38, is also charged with possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia, according to York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Shawn Kekoa-Dearhart.

Sheriff’s deputies pulled over a vehicle at 4:37 a.m. in the 400 block of Merrimac Trail for having “improper” tags, police said.

During the stop, police discovered Graves was in possession of heroin, Kekoa-Dearhart said. He then attempted to “destroy” it by ingesting it, spokeswoman Shelley Ward added.

Police arrested Graves at the scene and transported him to the Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail.

Online court records show he has been released on bail. He is scheduled to appear for a hearing at 9 a.m. Nov. 8 in the York-Poquoson General District Court.
