Tropical Storm Jose has reversed its path once again forecasters said on Friday morning, but is still not predicted to make landfall in the Historic Triangle.

Though Jose has been downgraded to a tropical storm, National Weather Service meteorologist Jeff Orrock said the storm will return to Category 1 hurricane status as early as Friday evening.

Tropical Storm Jose is moving slowly to the northwest, averaging about 8 mph, and is about 500 miles south-southwest of Bermuda. The storm is predicted to take a northern turn late Friday and into Saturday morning, Orrock said, pushing its path just off the Hampton Roads coast.

“As of right now, the weekend doesn’t look too bad,” Orrock said Friday morning. “But there is still moderate to high risk for rip currents along the coast.”

Orrock cautioned residents headed for the beach this weekend to take precaution while swimming, as strong rip currents will likely be present despite the lack of high winds along the coast.

“Some areas have already reduced the number of lifeguards on duty,” Orrock said, “So swimmers should be very cognizant of the fact that it won’t be windy, but these swells will be coming in this weekend.”

The weekend weather should remain pleasant, with highs hovering in the low 80s and plenty of sunshine.

Projected Hurricane Jose is forecast to approach the Hampton Roads coastline on Monday evening, but Orrock said the possibility for rainfall in the Historic Triangle is low.

“The rain is mostly situated around the storm system itself,” Orrock said, “So any potential for rainfall will be along the immediate coast and in the bay.”
