Hampton Roads events to honor the 16th anniversary of 9/11

HAMPTON ROADS — Monday marks the 16th anniversary of a series of devastating terrorist attacks on the United States that claimed the lives of nearly 3,000 people.

And while Hampton Roads is hundreds of miles away from where the attacks occurred — New York, Pennsylvania and Washington D.C. — the region plans to come together to remember those who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001.

Below is a list of remembrance services:

 Williamsburg
  • There will be a remembrance ceremony on Monday at 10:30 a.m. at the Liberty Lounge, located at 405 E. Duke of Gloucester Street. The event will feature “Colonial Williamsburg Nation Builder Patrick Henry” who will be played by Richard Schumann.

James City County

  • The James City-Bruton Volunteer Fire Department and Cub Scout Pack 414 will hold a remembrance ceremony in front of the station on Monday at 7 p.m.

Virginia Beach

  • The Travis Manion Foundation 9/11 Heroes Run is a 5K and one-mile event that will take place on Sunday with runners from around the globe. The Virginia Beach run will begin at 8:30 a.m. at the Military Aviation Museum. The run will also show support for those affected by the flooding in Houston. A Houston flag will join runners at all 9/11 Heroes Run locations across the country. The flags will then be sent to Houston.
  • 9/11 Ruck to Remember will feature three laps that equal nearly 20 miles with stops at Green Flash Brewing, Young Veterans Brewing Company and Reaver Beach Brewing Co. The event will begin at 11 a.m. on Sunday at Green Flash Brewing.
  • The 9/11 remembrance ceremony at Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story will be held on Monday at 9 a.m. at the base chapel. It will feature a speech from Chief Petty Officer Joshua London who responded to the World Trade Center while he was in the U.S. Army.

Norfolk

  • The Old Dominion University College Republicans will set up a memorial on the school’s Kaufman Mall on Monday, which will feature American flags in honor of those killed during the terrorist attacks.
  • The Norfolk Naval Shipyard will host a remembrance event on Monday at 7:45 a.m. at the flagpole.
  • The city of Norfolk will host its first CommUnity concert on Sunday at 4:30 p.m. at the Decker Half Moone Center. The concert, which will feature local musicians and those from the Virginia Symphony Orchestra and the Virginia Symphony Chorus, will serve as both a remembrance ceremony for those affected by the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, as well as a response to a recent riot in Charlottesville that killed one and injured several.

Portsmouth

  • A 9/11 remembrance ceremony will be held on Monday at High Street Landing at 6:30 p.m. It will honor those who died in the terrorist attacks, as well as American military members who have fought in the war against terror since.

Chesapeake

  • A ceremony will be held in Chesapeake City Park at the 9/11 memorial site at 8:30 a.m. on Monday. The ceremony will include an 8:46 a.m. bell tolling, which the city is encouraging all Hampton Roads churches to participate in.
