The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood watch for James City County and Williamsburg.

The watch is effective until 11 p.m. Tuesday. A flash flood watch means flash flooding may develop in certain areas, according to the National Weather Service. Potential flooding may result from heavy rains beginning Monday evening and continuing through Tuesday, according to a National Weather Service alert.

The NWS described flash flooding as a “very dangerous situation.”

The rain and heavy wind is caused by a tropical cyclone that is moving up the East Coast, and is expected to leave the region early Wednesday morning. Thunderstorms are possible Tuesday, according to the NWS.

Streams and creeks may rise and water may accumulate on roadways, especially in low-lying areas.

Two to four inches of rain are expected throughout the region. Charles City and Surry Counties were also included in the watch.

The NWS has also issued a coastal flood watch and a flood advisory through Tuesday evening as well.

The NWS warns residents to monitor the forecast and “be prepared to take action” if the watch is upgraded to a Flash Flood Warning.
