Police investigate possible illegal filming in Lynnhaven Mall bathroom

VIRGINIA BEACH — Police are investigating a man after someone reported that they were filmed using a public bathroom at Lynnhaven Mall.

On July 22, a man told a Virginia Beach Police Department officer, who was working at the AMC Lynnhaven 18 theater part-time, that he saw someone slip a cellphone underneath the bathroom stall he was using. He said the person appeared to be taking pictures or filming him using the bathroom, according to documents filed in Virginia Beach Circuit Court.

The man identified the person he thought was filming him to the officer. The VBPD officer questioned the man the victim pointed out, and he said that he hadn’t been filming in the bathroom, but had dropped his phone while he was in the stall, court documents state.

With permission, the officer searched the man’s phone and found several videos of people being filmed in bathroom stalls. The officer called VBPD detectives, who confiscated the phone, according to court documents.

On Aug. 1, police got a search warrant for the man’s Samsung Galaxy S7. They searched it for records such as incoming and outgoing calls, texts, pictures, videos and internet history.
