
NORFOLK — A Norfolk Sheriff’s Office deputy died of natural causes while working at the city jail Wednesday morning.
Corporal Gibran Barclift, 39, died at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. Before he was able to get to the hospital, jail staff tried to provide him with medical attention, according to the NSO.
It was determined by the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office that Barclift died of natural causes.
Barclift was a member of the NSO for 15 years. He began as a deputy in 2002, being promoted to master deputy in April. He worked in the community corrections, work release and transportation divisions, according to the NSO.
A New Jersy native, Barclift moved to Norfolk in 1999 to work for the Norfolk Waterside Marriott. According to the NSO, Barclift was a funny man who loved his job, friends and family.
