
Update: According to Brittany McBride Nichols, a spokesperson for the Virginia Department of Transportation, all lanes were reopened shortly after 9 a.m., but congestion snarled traffic until about 10 a.m.
An accident on Interstate 64 in James City County shut down all eastbound lanes of the highway Wednesday morning.
An alert posted by the Virginia Department of Transportation reported the crash near exit 231/Route 30 at 8:36 a.m. The crash caused a four-mile backup on the freeway.
According to Virginia State Police dispatch, there were injuries reported at the scene, but dispatch could not confirm the status of the injuries nor the cause of the accident. The region’s public information officer for state police was out of the office and there was no other officer on scene who is authorized to speak with media.
By 9 a.m., the right shoulder of the eastbound side of the interstate was closed with a four-mile backup remaining.
