A 21-year-old man was arrested early Saturday morning after he accidentally ran himself over while trying to elude police.
Derik R. Adams, of Yorktown, is facing several charges, including driving under the influence of alcohol and eluding police, after he allegedly led police on a chase down George Washington Memorial Highway in York County, according to York-Poquoson Sheriff’s office spokeswoman Shelley Ward.
Ward said a deputy was on patrol at 1:24 a.m. Saturday morning when he saw a four-door Honda Civic traveling at an “extremely high rate of speed” near the intersection of Fort Eustis Boulevard and George Washington Memorial Highway.
The deputy attempted to perform a traffic stop, but the vehicle continued driving southbound, crossing over the median into the northbound lanes at one point, Ward said.
After crossing over the median then returning to the southbound lanes, the vehicle slowed as if it was going to pull over, then sped back up, Ward said.
The car then turned right into a parking lot and drove toward nearby woods.
“That was when the deputy noticed the subject opening the driver’s side door,” Ward said. “He jumped out of the vehicle while it was moving, and the driver’s side back tire rolled over the subject’s legs.”
Adams stood up and continued to run away into the woods after his car ran over his legs, Ward said. The deputy was able to locate the 21-year-old in the woods while he was attempting to hide, she added.
Police called medics to treat Adams, who was taken to a hospital in Newport News. Ward said his injuries are not considered serious.
He was served arrest warrants at the hospital, Ward said.
One court records show Adams has previously been charged with other alcohol-related charges, including driving after illegally consuming alcohol, public swearing or intoxication and unlawful purchase or possession of alcohol.
Online records do not yet list a scheduled court appearance for Adams Tuesday.
