NORFOLK — A trip to the zoo is no longer just for kids. It’s all about the adults these next two months at the Virginia Zoo.

Senior Wednesdays are back at the Virginia Zoo in Norfolk. Guests ages 62 and up will receive free admission every Wednesday in August and September between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., according to a news release.

“There are many in this community who haven’t been to the zoo for 50 years, or more,” said Greg Bockheim, executive director of the Virginia Zoo in the release. “This is a great opportunity to come and see just how much the Zoo has been transformed.”

On Sept. 13, the zoo will host a Senior Discovery Day. Guests will receive a catered lunch, a visit with the zoo’s “animal ambassadors,” games, activities and admission to the zoo. Tickets must be bought in advance and cost $11, the release said.

The zoo offers wheelchairs for rent, and plenty of places to sit down and enjoy the animals. Guided tours and a wheelchair-accessible train can make any visit family-friendly for anyone from a newborn to great-grandfather, the release stated.

Seniors who want to take advantage of free admission in August and September will need to bring a valid ID with a birth date on it, the release said.

The Virginia Zoo is a Norfolk-based zoological park home founded in 1900. It is home to more than 500 animals and 100 species, according to the release.
