VIRGINIA BEACH — Two streets near the Oceanfront reopened around 4 p.m. after a gas leak briefly shut them down on Monday afternoon, officials say.
The Virginia Beach Police Department said in a tweet that 81st and 82nd streets are reopened after the leak. During the leak, traffic heading north on Atlantic Avenue and east on Shore Drive was rerouted.
The leak was reported to the Virginia Beach Fire Department before 3:30 p.m., said VBFD spokesman Art Kohn.
Kohn said that while it’s typical for people in the homes surrounding a gas leak to be evacuated, he said that around 3:40 p.m. there had yet to be a substantial evacuation in the area.
“There’s nothing out of the ordinary that I’m hearing thus far,” Kohn said.
The VBPD and VBFD are currently on the scene of the leak. Virginia Natural Gas did not respond for comment before publication.
