A psychologist has determined a 34-year-old man who allegedly killed his mother is not competent to stand trial.
Michael Alan Webb will need to be restored to competency before his case can proceed in court, Williamsburg-James City County Commonwealth’s Attorney Nate Green said Friday.
Competency is typically restored through medication, therapy, hospitalization, or all three.
Webb, who has a criminal history dating back to his teen years, is accused of killing his 64-year-old mother, Edna Webb, at her home in Grove on May 17, according to court documents.
Webb was scheduled for a preliminary hearing Friday morning in the Williamsburg-James City County Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court to determine whether there is probable cause to send his case to a higher court. Instead, a judge ordered he be restored to competency before the case proceeds.
A case file dating back to 2002 indicates Michael Webb suffers from mental health issues and has committed violence against his mother several times.
James City County Police conducted a welfare check at Webb’s mother’s home in the Brookside Heights subdivision in Grove after her coworkers reported she had not come to work, police said. She had been living with her son, documents state.
Police arrived to find Edna Webb deceased from apparent blunt force trauma in the kitchen area of the home she had shared with her son, police said. Police arrested Michael Webb and charged him with second degree murder that evening.

Civil court documents filed in the Williamsburg-James City County General District Court show a judge ordered Webb to vacate his mother’s house just two days before she was found dead in her kitchen.
Michael Webb had destroyed his mother’s property, broken house rules and threatened to kill her, court documents state.
Webb served a 15-year prison sentence for robbing a 7-Eleven clerk in Grove, court documents state. He was sentenced in May 2002.
Documents indicate Webb has been out of prison since at least June 2016, possibly earlier. Probation released him from their supervision in February 2017.
Webb will appear again in the Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court in October, unless he is restored to competency sooner, Green said.
