Police are investigating after a man with a fake ID allegedly approached a United Parcel Service driver two different times in a parking lot and signed for packages that weren’t his.

James City County Police received a report about a stolen package from a resident of Driftwood Way on July 10, police spokeswoman Stephanie Williams said.

The 49-year-old resident told police he had received an email notifying him his package had been delivered by UPS, but the package was not at his home, Williams said.

Police interviewed the UPS driver, who said he was approached by an unknown man in the parking lot of WindsorMeade Marketplace, located at 4900 Monticello Ave.

The man asked the UPS driver if he could pick up his package there, and displayed a driver’s license with the Driftwood Way resident’s name and address, but a photo of himself, Williams said.

After seeing the license, the unknown man signed for the package a left with it, police said.

It is unclear what was in the package, Williams said, because the victim regularly receives packages in the mail. He said he was expecting a lawnmower to be delivered, but the missing package did not fit that description.

The police report did not contain a description of the alleged package thief.

The UPS driver told police the same man had approached him another time and signed for another package belonging to the same victim.

The investigation is ongoing, and police plan to conduct more interviews, Williams said.
