VIRGINIA BEACH — A 12-foot-long great white shark was tracked swimming off the coast of Virginia Beach just after 7 a.m. Wednesday morning.
The 1,326-pound shark — named Hilton after the town where he was originally discovered, Hilton Head, S.C. — was tracked by OCEARCH, an organization that specializes in tracking and studying marine species.
The shark was tagged by OCEARCH on March 3. Since that time, he’s traveled 3,233 miles up and down the east coast, venturing as far north as the Eastern Shore.
Hilton swam near Virginia Beach after a short stay off the coast of the Outer Banks on July 16 and 17.
