A 39-year-old man is facing charges after police say he tried to run over another man in front of a Dunkin Donuts.

Robert Matthew Harshaw, of Williamsburg, is charged with attempted murder and destruction of property for allegedly trying to hit a 23-year-old walking in front of his car, York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Shelley Ward said.

It “appears” the two men knew each other, she added.

Deputies responded to a York County Dunkin Donuts at 11:03 p.m. on July 12 after a car crashed into the front door, Ward said.

Ward said the younger man was walking between the front of the car and the store, located at 6605 George Washington Memorial Highway, when Harshaw stepped on the gas.

The 23-year-old had to jump out of the way to avoid being hit, Ward said, and the car ran into the front of the building.

The impact caused “extensive damage” to the front door, although the victim, Harshaw and Dunkin Donuts employees were not injured.

Ward said the Dunkin Donuts was closing at the time, and employees were still in the store. The Dunkin Donuts website says that location closes at 10 p.m.

It is not clear whether the victim or Harshaw have a connection to the Dunkin Donuts, Ward said.

Harshaw was arrested the following day, June 13.

Harshaw is currently in custody at the Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail, although he is scheduled for a bond hearing at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday morning in the York-Poquoson General District Court.
