About a mile of Lynnhaven Parkway was shut down to all traffic as Virginia Natural Gas worked to stop a gas leak in the area.

The leak began around noon on Wednesday after a contractor digging underground struck and damaged a Virginia Natural Gas main line, according to VNG spokesman Duane Bourne.

Bourne said VNG was able to control the flow of gas around 6 p.m. and that repairs have begun.

The Virginia Beach Fire Department was on the scene of the gas leak, and four families have been evacuated from their homes, said VBFD spokesman Art Kohn.

Traffic was closed on Lynnhaven Parkway in both directions from Indian River Road to Albright Drive, Kohn said.
